Due to Sting attacking referee Charles Robinson after losing a non-title match to Bill Goldberg at Halloween Havoc, it was announced by J. J. Dillon on the October 25 ^th Nitro that Sting was stripped of the WCW World Heavyweight Championship, and that a 32-man single-elimination tournament was to be held to determine the next champ.
