WCW {Pro} - Sunday, 08/02/1998
- Let's start this week off with a trip to the mailbag...
- Leo K. O'Drudy, III writes:
- In any discussion of non-mentioning competing wrestling companies, it must be remembered and pointed out that the first and prime offender in this vein was the WWF. Wrestling's previous mid-to-late 80's heyday featured a WWF that literally never mentioned the name of another wrestling organization, even when a major star from it would arrive in the WWF. Now that WCW is in the position of dominance and defending itself from the upstart, I suppose the situation has been reversed.
- True, I never watched the WWF much until 1992, so I wouldn't remember this. However, back in the 80s, the WWF was the undisputed king of wrestling. While WCW had dominance for the last few years, I think
with the past few shows and ratings losses, the tide has turned again. My guess is that WCW doesn't want to lose any more fans than they already have. A wise philosopher once told me: "Hacksaw Duggan and The Barbarian does not a leading promotion make." I understand that I shouldn't use this forum to vent, but I have one suggestion to Sir Eric of Bischoff: Kill the ego-driven Late Hour and put on some quality matches like you did two years ago. That's what got fans into Nitro.
- One random rambling for the week before we go into this week's scheduled Nitro recap and squash matches. Last Thursday I was waiting to take a final exam for a summer class at the University of Central Florida. I was thinking of a match in the 80s that I never actually saw, but I read about it in the mark mags. It involved then-AWA Champion Rick Martel losing the belt by submission to Stan Hansen. (The winning move was some type of backbreaker, I forget the name.) Anyway, I was thinking about how nowadays, seeing a wrestler submit to a move is commonplace. Back when Rick Martel lost, I remember seeing very few wrestlers submit (I don't count jobbers), and PWI even had an article about Martel and his submission loss. I saw one such match when Ric Flair regained the NWA Heavyweight title over Dusty Rhodes when he pinned Rhodes using the Figure-Four. Rhodes didn't submit to the move and was ultimately put out after being in the move for such a long time. Flair was able to get the three-count shortly after. My, how the times change.
- We open the {Pro} with a shot of Bagwell "miraculously healed" and beating on Rick Steiner.
- Damn. Hudson's back. Sigh....
- They talk about nWo-Hollywood "taking over wrestling."
- From the July 20th Nitro: The Hall/Nash backstage confrontation and the tag team title match between Hall/Giant and Sting/Nash.
- Like Bill said, fifteen months of building Sting up, all pissed away.
- Lee Marshall interviews Steve "Mongo" McMichael.
- Mongo says that people still hold up the four fingers.
- Mongo will talk Arn Anderson into reforming The Four Horsemen.
- Mongo says he is Four Horsemen forever,
- To hype Road Wild, Mongo does this idiotic "motorcycle throttle" motion at the end of the interview.
- The new Slim Jim commercial airs. "Eat me!"
- For you locals -- NWA Wrestling at the Sanford Civic Center in Sanford, FL on August 5th.
- Promo for Road Wild 98.
- They talk about the U.S. Title situation.
- Larry Zbyzsko holds my sentiments exactly -- Instead of having a singles match featuring two "random" opponents, hold a tournament. Personally, I'd be thinking battle royal.
- From the July 20th Nitro: Bret Hart vs. Diamond Dallas Page for the vacant U.S. Title.
- This segment is notable because DDP submits to the Sharpshooter as the announcers talk about how much fight DDP has left in him.
- Starburst Road Report: Nitro in Denver, CO on the 3rd of August.
- They talk about Buff Bagwell showing his true colors on Nitro, then show footage of his realignment with nWo-Hollywood.
- {Pro} Exclusive #1: Bobby Blaze pins Buddy Lee Parker after a fallaway slam from a fireman's carry in 3:49.
- Good to see an exclusive once again, regardless of the participants.
- They mention WCW's "Open Door Policy" in reference to Blaze challenging Parker.
- A lock-up begins the bout and Parker opens with an armbar.
- Blaze counters with a drop toehold and an armringer.
- Parker regains control and follows with punches and kicks.
- Parker whips Blaze into the corner and gets a side suplex.
- Parker goes onto the middle rope and lands an elbow. Parker's two sucessive pin attempts yield two-counts each.
- Parker with a resthold.
- Blaze tries to mount a comeback, but Parker has none of it.
- Parker with a snapmare takeover followed by a chinlock.
- Blaze hits two shoulderblocks and begins to show offense.
- Oh, by the way, the referee is Rocky King, former NWA whipping boy for the stars.
- Blaze sends Parker to the corner, but this is reversed.
- Blaze tries a sunset flip, but gets 2.
- Parker sends Blaze to the floor and clotheslines him from the ropes!
- Back in the ring, Parker misses the kneedrop and gets dropkicked in the knee by Blaze.
- Blaze puts Parker up in a fireman's carry and hits a fallaway slam for the win!
- They talk about the situation with Stevie Ray and Booker T.
- Scott Hudson is "flowmoxed" over the situation. Huh? What?
- From the July 25th WCWSN: Stevie Ray vs. (NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!) Hacksaw Jim Duggan.
- This match ended in a Double-DQ for both wrestlers. I guess Hacksaw refuses to job to certain superior competition.
- This week in WCW Motorsports: Lance Hooper took a "champion's provisional" to get into the Winston West race. The hell? Hooper won something?!?
- Lee Marshall interviews Buff Bagwell.
- They talk about Buff's recent injury.
- Buff tries to get sympathy out of Lee, but no dice.
- Buff calls the fans and Rick Steiner idiots for sending cards to him.
- They talk about Goldberg winning the WCW World Title, which leads into...
- From Worldwide: Goldberg vs. His Favorite Punching Bag. (Read: Jerry Flynn)
- I wonder if this is a World Title match.
- Just for the record, it's no longer a clothesline, it's a GOLDBERG CLOTHESLINE. Remember this, for you will be tested later. :)
- The jackhammer is also "world-famous," according to Tony Schivione.
- Scott Hudson: "The streak stays intact...!" Yeah, like Flynn had a chance in hell.
- Promo for Road Wild 98.
- They talk about Eric Bischoff's ego and the horror that is "nWo Late Hour."
- Man, I can see it now for Starcade 98. Hank, the Angry Drunken Dwarf joins nWo-Hollywood and Tiger Jackson returns to defend WCW in a grudge match. That has "buyrate" written all over it. It also has crap written on it, too.
- {Pro} Exclusive #2: Glacier pins Doc Dean following a Cryonic Kick in 2:52.
- Doc Dean's one of my favorite jobbers and plays the face today. I hope he puts up a good fight before going down to this joker.
- Glacier comes out and shows us his own form of torture -- his entrance.
- Once again, the unofficial referee for the {Pro} -- Rocky King.
- Doc starts things off with a headlock.
- Glacier and Doc perform and series of Irish whips and both collide.
- Another series of whips and Doc takes Glacier down with a back body drop.
- Doc celebrates by doing the often imitated, never duplicated triple heel click. That needs to go.
- Glacier gives Doc a cold taste of reality with a palm thrust to the chest.
- Glacier takes control with a snapmare into a reverse chinlock.
- Doc gets some elbows into the midsection. Glacier's, not his own.
- Glacier takes Doc down and chokes him with his boot.
- Glacier, being the friendly guy that we all know and love him for, introduces Doc to the turnbuckle.
- Glacier lands a few kicks and throws Doc to the other corner.
- Glacier charges into the corner, but Doc counters with a kick.
- Glacier misses another kick as Doc puts Glacier into a fireman's carry into a suplex! A 2-count follows.
- Glacier regains control and whips Doc to the corner.
- Glacier grabs a handful of Doc's hair, throws him into the corner again, and hits the Cryonic Kick to the back of Doc's head. A 3-count follows.
- Damn it!
- We end the {Pro} on the note that nWo-Hollywood is on the upswing.
- See you next week!
